Well I met someone who touched my soul
And made my world brand new
There’s a part of me, a place inside
That now belongs to you
The love we found, the love we found
We carry with us so we’re never quite alone

Inspiration

After finishing The Best Thing in early 2016, I put the story away and considered it finished. I had written a few bits and bobs to set myself to revisit the world if I ever wanted — I introduced Ava Jerome as a potential business partner for Elizabeth, and the Zaccharas and Ruizes are in here as well. I also hinted at Emily continuing her matchmaking with Patrick and Steven.

But at the same time, I thought I’d never return to the story. I had told the story I wanted to tell (and in my opinion, the best story I’ve ever told). Until I started filming videos for my YouTube channel and talking about The Best Thing for the Patreon supporters. I decided that while Jason and Elizabeth’s story had ended, I wasn’t quite done with Sonny. His story was just as important and I thought he deserved more a closure.

I wrote a holiday epilogue in 2018 to revisit Jason and Elizabeth and introduce the idea of visiting Sonny. I intended to just add a few scenes this year for New Year’s but as I sat down to plan it, I realized all of these characters had more to say.

This isn’t a full-fledged sequel but more of a book end to The Best Thing. It’s four parts long, nearly 16k words in length. I hope you enjoy revisiting this world.

Timeline

This is set at December 2008, three years after The Best Thing ended. Part 1 includes last year’s holiday story which has been removed from The Best Thing and put here.

But remember the time I told you the way that I felt
That I’d be lost without you and never find myself
Let’s hold onto each other above everything else

Inspiration

This story has changed so much since I originally envisioned it in 2004. Lila Quartermaine had just died, and I found myself wondering how Port Charles would handle Audrey’s death. So I began writing based on that idea, and had six or seven chapters written before a computer crash killed them all. Almost ten years later, I returned to it, and changed it around so that there are very few aspects of that old story that remained: really just the title and the way I deal with Jason changing Sam’s paternity results.

Timeline

For the most part, the major backstory will be explained in the first few chapters. I’ve changed only a few things. I pick up the show about May 2004 (or whenever Jason changed the paternity results), and go from there. So from that period on, only what’s in my story is what happened. Basically — just how Sonny and Jason deal with his changing the results. Elizabeth does not come home in June 2004 and enroll the nursing program. Emily and Nikolas are together, after he comes back from the dead. None of the Mary Bishop going insane stuff happens. Not that it’s important, but I liked Mary so…pfft.

Steven Webber is played by Shaun Benson, rather than Scott Reeves, simply because I never really watched Scott as Steven, but I really liked Shaun’s portrayal back then. A note about Steven as a character: John Durant is not a factor in this story, so he’s just a normal doctor at General Hospital, having moved to Port Charles over the summer.

Carly is played by Tamara Braun because she was playing her in 2004 and her characterization drives Carly’s motives, rather than LW or SBr.

Thanks to Cora for her incredible help during the outlining stage, and then for her skills as a beta 🙂

Author’s Note

Sonny is going to struggle with mental illness in this story, particularly a type of bipolar disorder with mixed episodes. This basically means his mood swings occur much more rapidly, and even occasionally simultaneously. I don’t know anyone personally with this disorder–everything I know comes from hours of research.  People who have this disorder are not innately violent, so I want to make that disclaimer. I just tried to adapt the disorder to someone with Sonny’s specific characteristics. I hope I do this illness justice and make Sonny less of a caricature and feel more like a living, breathing man struggling with a difficult illness.

If you have any experience with this, please contact me to let me know if I’m making this work or if I’m messing it up. I don’t want this to be a soap opera disease where I make it up as I go along.

Inspiration & Disclaimer

Special thanks to Carla (kcke2pen) for supplying this story–one that’s been lost to me for nearly a decade. I wrote this story in September 2002, and it is the oldest piece of writing on this site now, with the exception of pieces of The Sisters.

This story is not particularly chipper. It deals with severe child abuse, and I’m more like the character of Emily in this, the hapless friend who learns of the abuse too late to do anything, than I am anyone else, but even that is very fictionalized. (The Law & Order fetish is all me, however :P)

Timeline

This is alternate universe story, in which no character has the same history as they do on the show so forget everything you know except what I tell you.  I will say the rereading this that I’m surprised at how much I changed the way Jason acted after the accident. I’m not sure I would have done that today, but eh, you make choices 😛

Therein it is related that in the alignment of the planets, occurring only once in the span of a millennia, there shall be a holy union of two. The male, in the first quarter of his life, shall be of flaxen hair and rigorous of body and mind; the female, having celebrated no more than twenty years, small and dark, of pure heart and blood.

Signaling their meeting, a flash, whereupon day will turn to night and then return swiftly.

Upon the binding of the chosen two, a thousand years of blessed light follow and come upon this world on that night, the eve of the fifteenth month. If conditions be not met, damnation will fall upon the land until the planets align once again.

Aurora Dawning is a full-fledged fantasy story with legends, magic, sorcerors and enchantresses. At one point, I had planned a sequel but it has mostly fallen off my radar.  I hope you enjoy this odd bit. Thanks to LeaB for being my original beta all those moons ago, and to Pia for writing the legend above.

This story has now been reposted in its entirety.

Timeline

After a body was found in the wreckage of the hotel fire, it was suspected of being both Zander Smith and Scott Baldwin. It ended up being neither of them, but when they thought it was Zander, Elizabeth was responsible for his death. She’d hit him on the head, causing him to be unconscious and die in the fire. Nikolas was suspected of the crime, and Ric was trying to frame him in order to clear Elizabeth.

Elizabeth wanted to come clean but ultimately, Jason agreed to sign a statement that cast guilt on Andy Capelli, the rogue detective that had died while trying to kill Jason after the fire. Elizabeth was in the clear, thanks to Jason. It didn’t matter since Zander wasn’t dead after all, so it was all a mess, to be honest.

Inspiration

I was extremely unhappy with the way the show handled Zander’s supposed death and Elizabeth’s part in it. It felt like she had zero POV in the whole thing, and was just a pawn. I also really hated how Nikolas and Emily were treating her during the whole thing. It definitely demonstrated to me why Ric was terrible for her. I’ve actually written two versions of the Elizabeth Murders Zander story — this one, which I wrote back in 2004, and Shadows, which I wrote a version of in 2004-05 then rewrote in 2014 as my first story back after five years.

I’m not happy with this story and I actually tossed it in the Fiction Graveyard for a time, but it’s not super terrible.

Inspiration

I Shall Believe begins in the fall of 2003. I’ve always thought the show copped out that year when writing Rebecca Herbst’s pregnancy into the storyline by making the baby Zander’s. He was a character that was clearly already on his way out, and it just didn’t show much imagination, and the fallout would have been more interesting had it been anyone else. So naturally, I made it Jason.

Timeline

This story begins after Sonny shoots Carly in the head and she wakes up without any memories or emotions. Sage Alcazar has tried to kill Lorenzo and come on to Dillon Quartermaine. This is one of the stories that received a great deal of feedback at the time it was posted in 2003-04, and then when I reposted it in 2006. Mostly because this story also features my attempt at writing Courtney in a sympathetic light, which was always difficult for Liason fans. Courtney has taken the boys to live in Haye’s Landing after the shooting, to keep them away from the press while Sonny is in jail. She and Jason have been married for about ten minutes.

Story Notes

I realize now that the character of Brian is almost unknown  — he was only on the show from about November 2003-February 2004. He was a sheriff in Haye’s Landing that owned the house Courtney rented while Carly was recovering. They were very cute together, and it was the first time I’d liked her in ages. So when I started this story in November 2003, I wrote Brian into it. He was a former FBI profiler who’d lost his wife Karen and moved back home. On the show, he moved to Port Charles to join the PCPD (which I thought was insane, but whatevs) and ended up being shot by Courtney in January 2004 (the crime Zander Smith was accused of and on the run for when he was killed by the cops) and then killed during the PC Hotel fire by Capelli. … Naturally I like my Brian better.

Note: Lucas Jones is in this story, and I wrote it originally in 2003/4 more than a year before his character came out as gay. At the time, I had no idea the show would eventually go in this direction, so when I write him in this story as straight and romantically involved with a girl, it’s not because I don’t approve, but simply this is how I wrote it eleven years ago.

Inspriration

Daughters began without much thought to the rest of the story. I just started writing the original opening scene (which has been slightly edited in this final version) in which Elizabeth and Patrick were siblings. I love the chemistry between Jason Thompson and Rebecca Herbst, and while the show has developed them as good friends, I wish they had more screen time.

It wasn’t until I reached the end of the first chapter that I even decided to bring in theme of fathers and daughters, and was able to title the story.

Timeline

Daughters is alternate universe with some use of the GH canon, which means portions of the GH world is in here. Jason’s accident, Sonny in the mob, Luke and Laura’s history with the Cassadines. However, relationships and other aspects diverge. Patrick and Elizabeth are twins who grew up in Port Charles along with Lucky, Robin, and Jason Quartermaine. Emily is still adopted. The story is relatively straightforward.
