Why Use Ebooks
If you’ve been reading my work for long, you can see that I tend towards the sprawling stories that have a lot of chapters and large word counts. Typically, books might have anywhere from 70,000 to 130,000 words. Most of my stories are more than 140,000 words. My chapters also tend to be long.
If you’re comfortable sitting at a computer or on an internet connected device to read, then by all means — continue doing so. I will also publish my chapters traditionally. I just want you guys to have off-line access to my stories. One of the things I regret most about the heyday of Liason fanfiction is that I trusted stories would always be there and didn’t save enough of them. For a few years during my break from 2008-2014, I forgot to renew Crimson Glass’s domain name and my stories were lost to anyone who wanted to reread.
If anything happens to me or my site, you can find my stories a lot of places now — but I just like the idea of you being able to take one of my books, store next to your other favorite authors, and be able to read it whenever and wherever you are. I treat my fanfiction writing career like I publish traditional books, so I want to treat my readers like you matter, too.
Using Ebooks
The most common question I get is how to do I use the ebooks? There are a few ways to “side-load” your books onto a device like the Nook or Kindle. I’m not familiar with any other devices, so if you use any other — please let me know and I’ll include instructions. I personally use a Nook and side-load all of my books using the Calibre Library Management program. I don’t purchase from Barnes & Noble anymore because of their DRM policies, but I love my Nook. I’ve included links to use Calibre, Nook, or the Kindle.
I’ve also included three different formats. The .epub is the basically universal format. It works on the Nook and all the other devies, including the Kindle. The .mobi is the Amazon format that is formatted specifically for the Kindle. The .pdf is for storing on your computer and is useful, even if you don’t have an ereader and you just want to store the books offline.
Right now, these are external links but I’ll put together my own instructions. I just have to borrow my sister’s Kindle and play with my Nook.
