Site & Story Status – September 2021

The text below is a summary of what’s in the video — the video has some more indepth information.

General Writing

  • I’m not sure how long it’s been since I made one of these officially with a full text post to go with it, but, here we are. Somehow, it’s September 2021.
  • You’ve heard more than enough about my hot mess of life, lol, but I think things are on the upswing. I’ve been doing better the last few weeks. I went on vacation with the family, and though it got off a very rough start, I spent some time on the beach and relaxed. I’m prepping for the next school year (on the day this goes live, I’ll actually be at my first day of work). I’ve been working on some fulfilling outside projects, and just generally getting myself back into a good headspace.
  • I didn’t write for a lot of July. Basically, the last time you read a Flash Fiction in mid-July was about the time I stopped writing pretty much anything. I literally didn’t look at anything until about a week ago. I’m working slowly on getting writing back into the daily routine, setting timers and just not pushing myself to make word counts.
  • The goal for September is just to write 25 minutes a day on both projects (more on that later). Obviously, I hope it’ll be end up being more but I’ll settle for at least 50 minutes a day.

Site & Channel

  • Site
    • I’ve been back at work on the Facelift. I’ve completed the Alternate History page, reworked the In Progress page and decluttered the main page. I’ve included visuals in the video.
    • I’ve started a new feature on the site called Throwback Thursdays which pulls out older stories from the archive to talk about them. I’ve been trying to pick things from early in my career because I’m moving into year 20 next July, so I’d like to have some content to celebrate. (Forgot to mention this in the video, lol)
  • Channel
    • It’s been mostly dormant, and I don’t see that changing other than site & story status videos at the moment. I’m not back until full swing production schedules just yet, so until then, that’s how it’ll be.

Individual Story

Mad World, Book 4

  • I took a break from working on this because I just wasn’t feeling it. Honestly, I wasn’t feeling any story in July so it was probably better that I wasn’t forcing it.
  • I started working on it again in late August, but I’m taking it slow to avoid burnout. With the school year starting, I’m not making any promises on when things are coming until I have a handle on things.
  • I will say that I like what I’ve written so far and it feels a lot less forced than it did in July. Let’s cross our fingers and hope it lasts.
  • My goal for September is to get through most of Act 2 which, would be chapters Chapter 84-104. I’d like to be around Chapter 90, but if I can be between 86-90, I’ll be happy with it. We’ll see how it goes.

Bad Karma/Karma (Still Unsure)

  • I’ve been writing for #GHWhoDunIt at The Liason Haven since 2018, but I haven’t written a new one in a while. This year, the forum decided to shift to holidays, so I ended up with New Year’s Eve. If you missed any of the previous entries, I wrote Death Becomes Her in September 2018 and Death by Candleight in April 2019.
  • When I was feeling frustrated by all my current projects, I started making notes about new projects just to give myself something to concentrate on. Finally, I turned to the entry I’d promised for December, and I decided to try and set it more in GH canon.
  • Once I did that, I had a lot of fun playing with ideas and what to do with it. I started writing it last week, and I’m really excited for it. It’s set in December 1997/January 1998 which is the oldest I’ve done anything (outside some flash fiction)
  • It’s also longer than my previous entries — it’ll be three parts, but each will be around 30k so I’ll have to see how Liason Haven wants to divide it up as we get closer to release.
  • It’s exclusive to the forums for about two months usually, and then I post it everywhere else. I will definitely link you guys here.
  • The production schedule is aiming for for the alpha draft to be done by October 31, then the beta draft November 30, and the final draft sometime in mid-December. I’ll update you guys as we move through.

Other Projects

  • For the Broken the Girl, Book 2
    • I honestly have no idea when I’ll be getting back to this. I want to write it, but I think it’s the kind of story I need to be in the right head space for.
  • Fool Me Twice, Books 2 & 3
    • Once I’m sure that Mad World is back on firm footing and towards the end of the alpha draft, I want to get this going.
    • I’m actually going to be playing with this in my spare time because I do always like to have some plotting going on as something that feels like a break but also feels like writing.
    • I want to plot out both books 2 & 3 at the same time, so the hope is that Mad World will be ready for edits in November, and I can work on FMT 2 starting then, but that’s a happy thought.
    • More likely, I’ll be working on the plotting for most of the fall and will start this in the winter. I’ll keep you in the loop.
  • Flash Fiction
    • It’s back, its on Saturdays & Sundays.
